Samsung today revealed the first Tizen-based smartphone, which – as expected – will make its debut in Russia later this year.

The Samsung Z joins Samsung’s Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches, which also run Tizen.

Hidden behind the 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display is a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, which promises a fast startup and multitasking capabilities, as well as support for 3D graphics, smooth scrolling, and improved browser rendering.

A built-in fingerprint sensor also adds a layer of privacy protection, while the Ultra Power Savings Mode allows for emergency use, even at minimal battery levels. The new operating system also boasts a distinctive layout and various theme settings, so users can tailor the device to best suit them.

“Samsung is committed to enhancing the mobile experience of consumers with innovation that is both personal and unique to their needs,” said DJ Lee, president of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business division. “The Samsung Z integrates the power and adaptability of the Tizen platform, enabling users to browse the Web faster and utilize applications more effectively.”

But there’s more to the Z handset than its vital organs: The external design features a slim, angular aesthetic, providing what Samsung called “a differentiated look and feel,” while still maintaining the company’s design identity.

Available in black or gold, the Samsung Z will go on sale in Russia during the third quarter.

Later this year, consumers can access additional applications through the Tizen Store, which will run a one-year promotional program for developers, in an effort to encourage more people to join the Tizen effort.

While the operating system has a long way to go to catch up with the more popular iOS and Android brands, the Tizen Association is determined to succeed. In February, the group handed out checks worth $100,000 to $200,000 to nine app developers; in total, it gave out $4.04 million to the 64 winners of the Tizen App Challenge.

Developers may soon have another platform to work with, according to recently resurfaced reports of Tizen-based Samsung smart glasses, expected as early as this fall.
