Say Goodbye to the Java Browser Plugin

[ad_1]

Modern browsers are moving quickly to drop support for plugins, and Oracle sees the writing on the wall. This fall, the Java browser plugin will begin its farewell, the company confirmed in a Wednesday blog post(Opens in a new window).

With modern browser vendors working to restrict and reduce plugin support in their products, developers of applications that rely on the Java browser plugin need to consider alternative options such as migrating from Java Applets (which rely on a browser plugin) to the plugin-free Java Web Start(Opens in a new window) technology,” Oracle wrote.

The demise of the Java plugin begins on Sept. 22 with the release(Opens in a new window) of JDK (Java Development Kit) 9. “This technology will be removed from the Oracle JDK and JRE in a future Java SE release,” Oracle said.

The 20-year-old computer software, developed by Sun Microsystems and later acquired by Oracle, allows folks to operate app-like features on Internet browsers. But growing concerns over security and that arrival of more modern Web solutions have made Java a less popular solution for developers. Microsoft(Opens in a new window), Google, Mozilla, and Apple(Opens in a new window) have already ended (or will soon end) support for NPAPI Web plugins, including Silverlight and Java. So it only makes sense, then, for Oracle to put the program out to pasture.
