For most of us, the calculator on our smartphones is a godsend when figuring out the dinner bill or other computations, but for Shakuntala Devi, her brain was the fastest way to figure out a complicated math problem.

Google is honoring the 84th birthday of the so-called “Human Computer” with an animated homepage doodle that spells out its logo as it might appear on a calculator, next to a smiling, digital portrait of Devi (click below to see it in action).

“A calculated effort today for the #humancomputer #ShakuntalaDevi’s 84th birthday,” Google tweeted today.

Devi was born in Bangalore, India in 1929. After discovering her talent for numbers, Devi’s circus performer father took his daughter on the road, making her skills part of his act. She had no formal education, but demonstrated a masterful command of numbers well into adulthood, challenging man and machine alike, and publishing a number of books on the subject.
