If you’re a developer who found yourself excited by all the new Windows 10 features Microsoft announced at its Wednesday event, you can now check out the latest preview version of Windows 10 (Build 9926).
If you’re already using Windows 10, your updated OS will arrive via Windows Update automatically. If you’re impatient, you can always fire up the Windows update tool and perform a manual update. And, yes, this will be one of the last times it takes Microsoft so long to release an update to the Windows 10 preview.
“I know it was tough to wait for a new build. The gap between 9879 and 9926 is the longest you should expect to see with the program, because of the holidays and the need to add and stabilize feature payloads. We’ll get new builds out faster moving forward – thank you for being patient with us,” Windows 10 team member Gabe Aul said in a Friday blog post(Opens in a new window).
As for the new features arriving in Build 9926, Microsoft notes that its digital assistant Cortana will now be available to access via the desktop. You can talk to her via your PC’s microphone, but Cortana will also respond to typed queries.
“Cortana can learn your preferences and provide smarter recommendations over time. You can manage Cortana’s Notebook to add interests from Bing like news, sports, finance and weather so Cortana can proactively offer recommendations and information for you,” Aul wrote.
“Keep in mind, Cortana is new to the desktop – things might not work as expected,” he warned.
Other features to be found in the new Windows 10 preview version include a brand-new Start menu (though no transparency yet), an updated Settings app that looks a bit more like the typical Control Panel Windows users have enjoyed for years, updated Photos and Maps apps, a first (beta) look at the new Windows Store, and the Xbox app—which brings more of the console experience(Opens in a new window) into the Windows OS than ever before.
“Thank you again to our Windows Insiders for your continued support and participation. Next month, we’re excited to extend the Windows Insider Program to include Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones as well as PCs, and we’ll share more information about how that will work as we ready our first build for broad availability,” Aul wrote.
