Yelp and Yahoo and are teaming up to do battle with Google, with Yelp content helping to power Yahoo Search in the U.S.

“Yelp’s rich reviews, ratings, photos and business information will help power Yahoo Search in the U.S., making finding businesses a breeze,” Mike Ghaffary, Yelp vice president of business and corporate development, said in a blog post(Opens in a new window).

With more than 53 million reviews on record, Yelp is the leading local guide “for real word-of-mouth on everything from boutiques and mechanics to restaurants and dentists,” Ghaffary boasted.

“At Yahoo, we’re always looking to build great partnerships to provide a richer experience for our users. That’s why we’re especially fired up to add trusted user content from Yelp, bringing more business listings, more photos, and more reviews to the recently refreshed Local Search and Yahoo Maps experiences,” Anand Chandrasekaran, senior director of product management, wrote in a separate blog post(Opens in a new window).

News of the union leaked early last month, when Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer let slip that the companies would be joining hands to integrate the review site’s user-generated feedback into Yahoo’s search results.

Instead of replacing the Yahoo Local reviews, Yelp will supplement the site, allowing users to dig a little deeper into retail chains, mom-and-pop shops, spas, doctors and hospitals, restaurants, and more.

“Yelp is a welcome addition to our roster of local content partners,” Chandrasekaran said.

Yelp announced a similar deal with Microsoft’s Bing two years ago. But Yelp is not as friendly with Google. Yelp co-founder Jeremy Stoppelman appeared before Congress in 2011 to complain about Google using Yelp content without permission, and threatening to cut Yelp out of search results entirely when it complained. Ultimately, inquiries into Google’s business practices required the search giant to stop that sort of activity.
