Students in the city of Chicago will soon be learning to code.

Apple has partnered with Chicago’s Mayor, its public K-12 school district, and community college system to bring coding opportunities to the city’s nearly 500,000 students this spring through a major expansion of its Everyone Can Code program. The program aims to help students become proficient in Swift, Apple’s programming language for building iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS apps.

As part of the initiative, City Colleges of Chicago will, for the first time, offer Apple’s free app development curriculum, which launched in May, and is already available at more than 30 community colleges around the country. The full-year curriculum was designed by Apple engineers and educators to teach students how to design apps using Swift. Apps like Airbnb, Kayak, TripAdvisor, Venmo, and Yelp were created with Swift.

Meanwhile, public K-12 schools will create Swift Coding Clubs as a new after-school option where students will learn coding and prototyping concepts and get an introduction to Swift.

“At Apple we believe coding is an essential skill, so we’ve designed Everyone Can Code to give everyone the power to learn, write and teach coding,” Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said in a statement(Opens in a new window). “We’re thrilled to be working with our friends and partners in the great city of Chicago on this initiative. Together with Mayor [Rahm] Emanuel, Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges, we look forward to helping students learn Swift and build the skills they need to thrive in today’s workplace.”
