Need a gift idea for the tiny human in your life this year? Actev Motors is now shipping its first smart, electric go-kart for kids.

The $999.95 Arrow Smart-Kart(Opens in a new window) lets buyers customize their vehicle with a red or silver body kit—for an additional $149.95.

Designed by professional racecar drivers for children ages five to nine, the go-kart features a top speed of 12mph, two independent 250W electric motors, rubber tires, and a seat with dual speakers and indicator light. The optional (though encouraged) plastic body kit attaches to the steel chassis, and includes collision avoidance sensors and vinyl decals.

“As a long-time car enthusiast, I wanted to leverage my 35 years of technology experience to bring a whole new category of fun and safe vehicles to families,” Actev CEO Dave Bell said early this year.

“The Arrow Smart-Kart gets kids off the couch and outside, and behind the wheel of a real driving machine,” he said.

Parents can control speed and safety features via the free Actev mobile app for iOS and Android. You decide how fast and where your kids ride, while front-facing ultrasonic proximity sensors automatically monitor relative speed and distance to nearby objects. When the feature is on, the kart triggers collision avoidance if an obstacle is detected.

Additional accessories are also on sale, including a battery adapter, helmet, standard or double-capacity battery pack, standard or rapid charger, and drifting wheel rings. Actev promises more bells and whistles in February, like distance-sensing “smart cones,” laser tag sensors, and gaming apps.

The $1,000-plus Arrow Smart-Kart is a pricier alternative to Tesla’s $499 Model S For Kids. A miniaturized version of the $70,000 lithium-ion battery-powered vehicle, Radio Flyer’s fully customizable ride-on comes with working headlights, a frunk (front trunk organizer box), forward/reverse capability, and a sound system.
