A beloved toy company has an eye on sustainability.
The Lego Group made a commitment(Opens in a new window) on Monday to invest up to $400 million in the next three years for sustainability and social responsibility initiatives. That includes gradually removing the single-use plastic bags inside Lego boxes that hold loose bricks and replacing them with recyclable paper bags. The company wants to make all packaging sustainable by 2025.

“We have received many letters from children about the environment asking us to remove single-use plastic packaging,” said Niels B Christiansen, LegoGroup CEO. “We have been exploring alternatives for some time and the passion and ideas from children inspired us to begin to make the change.”
The investment will also focus on inspiring children through play. Lego wants to reach 8 million children every year through programs with organizations including UNICEF and Save the Children.
The company also wants to make sure its products don’t end up in landfills. Lego bricks made today are compatible with those made 40 years ago, so the Lego Replay program encourages people to donate their Lego toys to children in need. It was tested in the US last year and has thus far donated bricks to 23,000 kids across the country. Replay will roll out to two more countries by the end of 2022.
Sustainable materials are a priority too. By 2030, the company wants to expand the production of bio-bricks, including those made from sugar cane, through research.

“As a company who looks to children as our role models, we are inspired by the millions of kids who have called for more urgent action on climate change,” said Christiansen.
