Unity Games today announced official support for Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld console.

This integration allows Sony-licensed developers to launch their games on the PS Vita via the new Unity 4.3 engine(Opens in a new window).

They can also take full advantage of platform-specific functions like motion sensors, front and rear cameras, dual analog sticks, and a rear touch pad, as well as the full suite of PSN features—Trophies, Friends, and Matching.

Unity’s greatest draw, however, is its one-time development, wherein engineers can build a game once, and have it played on multiple platforms—with only minimal tweaking.

“Not only that, [but] you can now create both 2D and 3D games with Unity 4.3, animate almost anything with the native animation system Mecanim, and implement very cool graphics,” Unity said in a blog post(Opens in a new window).

The company currently supports PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the Wii U, among others.

One of the first to utilize Unity’s new platform, game maker Zoink! released its Stick It To The Man(Opens in a new window) title for PS3 and PS Vita.

“We are proud to have reached this platform milestone and we are very eager to see what exciting games you will create for PS Vita,” Unity said.

While Sony’s new PlayStation 4 ($799.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window)
is a hit, its handheld Vita has not been as popular among mobile gamers. In hopes of boosting sales, the company in August dropped the console’s price to $199—less than its $249.99 (Wi-Fi) and $299 (3G) cost when it launched in North America in 2012.

As if a struggling handheld console weren’t enough, Sony recently unveiled the PlayStation Vita TV—a tiny set-top box device that will offer Japanese consumers a new way to consume entertainment.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
